Traditional Dolls
Crafting dolls that wear ethnic and ancient garments
dates back to late 19th century Moscow. The
“Russkiye Kukly” workshop (meaning “Russian Dolls”)
has revived this fascinating tradition of old
Russia. The heads of our dolls are made of gypsum
and hand painted. In creating the dolls, a craftsman
applies traditional Russian fabrics and natural
materials, such as willow wood, bast, birch bark,
leather, fur, flax, wool, and glass beads made in
the village of Kostino near Moscow. These dolls are
created with ethnographic accuracy and artistic
persuasiveness to depict the look in old Russia.
